The Winter Solstice

Honouring the dark, welcoming the light, and understanding the next twelve days

Today marks the Winter Solstice, the longest night of the year and a powerful turning point in the natural cycle. In yoga philosophy and in many ancient traditions, this day is not something to rush through or distract ourselves from. It is a moment to pause, to be still, and to recognize the wisdom found in rest.

Nature is quiet right now. The earth is conserving energy. Seeds are resting beneath the soil, not inactive, but preparing. The Winter Solstice reminds us that growth does not always look like movement. Sometimes growth happens in the dark, unseen, and slowly.

At Divine Aura Yoga School, we honour this time as an invitation inward. Before the light fully returns, we are asked to sit with the night. To reflect on what this past year has shaped, challenged, and taught us. To soften instead of push.

This moment in the year teaches us that rest is not a pause from life. It is part of life.

Why the Winter Solstice matters

Energetically, the Winter Solstice represents a threshold. From today forward, the days begin to lengthen, even if the change feels subtle at first. In yogic understanding, this mirrors the shift from heaviness and stillness toward gentle awakening and, eventually, clarity.

Rather than immediately setting goals or forcing direction, the solstice invites a different approach. It asks us to consider what we are ready to release before moving forward. It asks us to listen before we act.

This is a time to acknowledge what no longer aligns, to honour endings, and to create space for something new to take shape without rushing its arrival.

The meaning of the twelve days that follow

In many contemplative traditions, the twelve days following the Winter Solstice are seen as a sacred window of reflection. Each day symbolically represents one month of the year ahead.

Instead of mapping out the entire year all at once, this practice encourages slow awareness. Paying attention to emotions, themes, ideas, and patterns that surface naturally. What you notice during these days can offer insight into how the year ahead wants to unfold.

This is not about predicting the future. It is about cultivating intuition and presence. Often, the body and heart understand what the mind has not yet named.

A gentle practice for the next twelve days

You may choose to spend a few quiet moments each day in reflection. This can look like journaling, meditation, a mindful walk, or simply sitting in silence.

You might explore questions such as

What am I ready to let go of

What am I being asked to nurture quietly

Where do I need more rest or softness

What kind of energy do I want to move with in the coming months

There is no right way to do this. Some days may feel clear, others may feel quiet. Both are

part of the process.

The Winter Solstice reminds us that darkness is not something to fear or fix. It is part of the rhythm that allows light to return with meaning. As teachers, students, and lifelong learners, this season invites us to trust what is unfolding beneath the surface, even when we cannot yet see the outcome.

May these next twelve days offer space.

May you feel supported in stillness.

May what is meant to grow, do so in its own time.
